The New Roman Empire now available in hardback and paperback! Rated Four Stars by: John Walsh Bookideas.com "Great fun and most entertaining! This kind of jokey patois is exactly the right tone for the fiction and the author has a real ear for the dialogue. Fans of private eyes are in for a real treat and I look forward to reading more of the adventures of Dillon McDonaugh." Chapter One: Cull De Heat I don't like being boosted out of down and dirty dream two snores shy of the crack of dawn. Sleep is hard enough to come by for a full time insomniac and the few hours I am able to grab shouldn't be interrupted by an after hours idiot calling in on my private line. Benny Bourdreaux knew where I'd be and I gathered by his tone that he had more on his mind than me snagging the last half of twenty-one winks. "McUnna!" he blurted at the tone of the answering machine. "Git ova here! I gotta job ferya. Hurri-up. Ya know I can't cull de heat. De dun't gibba-chit what happens ova here." Benny has a slight speech impediment. His legendary lisp dates back to the days when he used to make his living as a body slam artist along the upper mid-west junior high gym circuit. A disgruntled ham and egger out of Moline, Illinois didn't think that twenty-seven eighty quite covered a full careen into a turnbuckle and took out the difference in Benny's face with the business end of a folding chair. Benny opened a bistro over on Adkins Avenue with the stipend his lawyer squeezed out of the settlement and since he was into me for the better part of my next three lease payments, I figured it was worth a while to drop an answer onto his distress call. Book Blurb: A chance meeting at a seedy south-side Chicago sports bar will lead sometime sleuth Dillon McDonaugh into a tight tale of intrigue, obsession and violence. When the under-aged daughter of a United States Senator enters McDonaugh's life, he sees her as the only means out of his current financial dilemma. Accepting a cash retainer, McDonaugh delves into his client's checkered past and her obsession with a mysterious sex club called The New Roman Empire. The hunt for the club will take McDonaugh to an uptown brothel, a suburban sanitarium and finally to an abandoned steel mill, where he is nearly incinerated by an arsonist determined to throw him off the trail. When his client turns up dead, McDonaugh becomes the police's prime suspect and the target of the real murderer who is bent on keeping both his identity and the location of the New Roman Empire a dark secret.
